Response to the Christchurch Shootings Survey

Invitation to Participate

Welcome. Kia Ora. Assalam-O-Alaikum.  أهلا وسهلا .

Title of Research: Response to Mosque Shootings in Christchurch Survey

Name of Researchers: Dr. Karen L. Blair & Dr. Rhea Hoskin

Invitation to Participate

You are invited to participate in a brief survey online survey that will ask you questions related to your response to the recent shooting at two Mosques in Christchurch, NZ.

What is the study about?

The purpose of this survey is to better understand how people respond to shootings that target specific communities.

What will I be expected to do?

After reading through this document carefully, if you decide to participate in the study, you will be re-directed to the online survey. The survey will ask you questions about your personal demographics (e.g., age, gender, education), your personality and attitudes and beliefs concerning how the world operates. You will also be asked about your emotional response to the shootings in Christchurch and the reactions of your friends and family to the shooting.

How much time will it take?

The survey should take you anywhere from 15 to 25 minutes to complete, depending on how quickly you read and how long your answers are to various open-ended questions.

Will anyone know what I said?

Everything that you say will be entirely anonymous. The survey will not collect any identifying information. When the data is analyzed, it will be done so in aggregate format and nothing that could possibly identify you will be kept in the data file

What happens if I change my mind and wish to withdraw?

You may leave the study at any time without penalty. Simply close your browser and leave the study. If you would like to have your data removed from the study, click the link at the bottom of the page that says “withdraw my data” and an email will automatically be sent to the researcher identifying the random number associated with your survey response so that that response can be deleted from the data set.

What are the potential benefits and harms associated with participation in the study?

You may find it interesting to reflect on the questions asked in the study and to think about your response to violent events in the world.

As a thank you for your participation, you will be entered into a prize draw to win a $50 gift card to Amazon.

Risks of Participation: There are no expected risks associated with participating in this study. Thinking about a tragic shooting may also be upsetting, but we do not expect that the questions will bring about any additional distress over and above what one may have as a result of knowing about the shooting event.

Where do I get questions answered?
